Five For Free #59

The Jezabels - Endless Summer

It seems an age since Aussies The Jezabels released their first EP back in 2009, but finally they release their debut album in the UK this week (it's been available down under since September). 'Prisoner' has earned the Sydney quartet both acclaim and success, reaching number two in their homeland. With alternative guitar-pop tunes as strong as the likes of 'Endless Summer' it's not hard to see why.

Dry The River - New Ceremony

Also out this week is the less long-awaited debut album from Londoners Dry The River, themselves the recipients of much press in the past year or so. Some are writing them off as mere Fleet Foxes copyists (maybe they're the new Goldheart Assembly?!) and others are happily falling for their pastoral indie-folk tunes. 'Shallow Bed' doesn't seem like a bad album to us, check out free track 'New Ceremony'.

Field Mouse - Happy

As promised last week, here's another beautiful track from Brooklyn dreampop band Field Mouse. Their new single 'You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom' was out on 7" last week and its B-side 'Happy' is available for free below. It's a quietly sweeping piece of punchy, shoegazey loveliness and if this is the quality of their B-sides they should make a cracking debut album at some point. More please!

Parakeet - Tomorrow

In other single news - Mariko Dol, bass player with grungy revivalists Yuck, has just released this track under her solo guise, Parakeet. The band name may give a list of non-connected results when googled, but the song is more accessible and sounds not unlike 90s alt-rock girl group Sidi Bou Said. Not a bad thing at all, but we suggest she works a bit harder with the band names in future.

Shimmering Stars - When I See You Again

Some bands are perfectly named - Shimmering Stars aptly fits the sound made by this Canadian trio who mix Spectorish pop with shoegaze and lo-fi indie to craft rough-yet-shiny pop nuggets. Their new single 'When I See You Again' does indeed shimmer and twinkle with some surfy guitar twangs and booming production. It's not a new trick but it's a damn good one.
