The Chapman Family - No More Tears

Single review by KevW

Stockton-on-Tees clan The Chapman Family have, commercially at least, never quite lived up to the hype thrust upon the by the likes of NME a few years ago, and this is no doubt due in part to the recent dearth of indie-guitar music muscling in amongst the current LOL-pop brigade whose ringtone friendly, throwaway nonsense currently rules the roost when it comes to the top 40. But whereas fellow north-eastern punky types such as The Futureheads and Maximo Park happily threw in radio-friendly choruses and pop hooks to achieve their moments in the sun, The Chapman Family have refused to compromise their vision in exchange for a turn on the Radio 1 playlist.

New track 'No More Tears', taken from the forthcoming 'Cruel Britannia' EP is bristling with post-punk energy and vigour and despite a reasonably subtle, crooned lead, the barking, vexed backing vocals and ferocious guitars mean their commercial position is unlikely to change here. But why should it? You get the impression that the message is more important than the money. The refrain of "No more lies, no more fear, no more hate, no more tears" is spat out in such an aggressive manner that it contradicts itself, fighting fire with fire. If Editors hadn't had number one albums and instead their dreams had been pulled out from under their feet before they even started then they might be creating music with this much passion and angst instead of sub-Interpol dreariness.
