Here We Go magic - How Do I Know

Brooklyn indie/experimental types Here We Go Magic are putting out their third album 'A Different Ship' this week on the superb Secretly Canadian label. 'How Do I Know' is a tidy little bundle of alternative pop magic that combines their love of krautrock, folk, indie and electronica into something irresistible and toe-tappingly lovely; they're one of those bands that just seems to keep getting better.

The Magnetic North - Bay Of Skaill

The Magnetic North are the side-project of Erland Cooper of Erland & The Carnival fame. On their album 'Orkney: Symphony Of The Magnetic North', Cooper and co. explore the islands he calls home and channel local literature, folklore and landmarks into a baroque tribute that tries to capture the essence of the place. The results are often quite beautiful, as on 'Bay Of Skaill'.

Taffy - So Long

Tokyo quartet Taffy also have an incredibly British sound, but theirs is that of the rich history of guitar music (particularly the indie variety), and their new album 'Caramel Sunset' sounds a little bit like many of your favourite alternative rock and pop bands of the past 30 years. Single 'So Long' mixes C86, baggy, Britpop and a shade of shoegaze fuzz with brilliant results.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

jj - Beautiful Life

Given that their early output was fired out at a rate you could barely keep up with, it's been surprisingly long since we heard from enigmatic Swedish duo jj. The 'Kills' mixtape at the end of 2010 was their last offering, but this week they release new EP 'jj no. 4' for download with vinyl following next week. The EP's lead track is the stunningly evocative 'Beautiful Life' which is more of their expert mix of sparkling, otherworldly dreampop. It sounds like summer and the soundtrack to the most perfect post-club chill-out you'll ever experience. Play it lots, it just keeps getting better each time.
