Five For Free #88

New Hands - Tulips

'Tulips' is the second single from Ontario quintet New Hands and is the first since they decided on a year long project to record a full album, experimenting with their sound and pushing it in various directions. It's a commitment they're dedicated to and 'Tulips' is a cracking way to start, a hybrid of styles that begins with ticking electronic beats before building into a powerful and eclectic wall of sound.

Whalers - Cheat On Each Other

Hailing from the musical hotbed of Austin, Texas are garage rock group Whalers whose sound combines trebley, twangy guitars with ragged riffing and husky vocal tones. It's traditional, dirty Southern rock 'n' roll that incorporates elements of blues, country, surf and R&B to create a classic sound. Check out free download 'Cheat On Each Other' from their 'Paddle Easy' EP.

Perfume Genius - Rusty Chains

We haven't got close enough to give him a sniff, but Mark Hadreas is certainly beginning to live up to the second half of his Perfume Genius moniker. His first album was spellbindingly intimate and follow-up 'Put Your Back N 2 It' only cemented his reputation further. Rarely has one man and a piano created such emotion, and amazing free track 'Rusty Chains' didn't even make the cut. Wow.

Mrs Magician - Fools Paradise

Brining us a touch more surfy garage rock are San Diego band Mrs Magician whose debut album 'Strange Heaven' was released to much acclaim earlier this year. Already they have a brand new single out called 'Fools Paradise' that sounds like some of the US's best indie bands from the past few (Real Estate, Surfer Blood, Best Coast etc.) years rolled into one, and the great news is you can download it for free.

Antony & The Johnsons - Rise

This new track from highly respected song master Antony Hegarty was recorded for the soundtrack of eco-film 'Coral Rekindling Venus'. With a voice and talent like his, this was only ever going to be a success, and 'Rise' is up their with Antony & The Johnsons' best work. It looks as though it'll be a one-off track, not scheduled for their next album so get your mitts on it now.
