Out This Week - 22nd October 2012

Young Rival - Black Is Good

With the interesting motto "Some of us bump, others slump. We bump" are Canadians Young Rival who, on the strength of this track at least, definitely bump. 'Black Is Good' is taken from their new album 'Stay Young', the follow-up to their eponymous 2010 debut, and is a rowdy garage stomp that excels in making a simple verse give way to a pretty damn catchy chorus.

The D.O.T - And A Hero

At the start of the previous decade, two of the UK's brightest hopes were garage MC/experimentalist Mike Skinner of The Streets and psychedelic voyager Rob Harvey of The Music, a band who fizzled out before their considerable potential was realised. The unlikely pair have joined forces as The D.O.T. and the collaboration has yielded some excellent results. Here's 'And A Hero' from their new album 'And That'.

Mac DeMarco - Freaking Out The Neighborhood

There's been an awful lot of hype about the new album from Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco, a man who only released his solo debut earlier this year. The factually titled '2' is out this week and is billed as being his first "proper" full-length. Which, if you discount the 12 tracks on 'Rock And Roll Night Club' it is. Whatever, 'Freaking Out The Neighborhood' is a top tune nonetheless. Have a listen below.

Sinkane - Runnin'

It's nearly a year since we last featured sometime Yeasayer multi-instrumentalist Sinkane, and after a bit of a delay his debut solo album 'Mars' is in shops this week. Taken from it is 'Runnin'' which shares some of his former band's eclectic and transcontinental sounds, adding a decent dose of funk and a shuffling beat that's aimed at the dancefloor. You could consider this the sound of modern disco.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Tamaryn - Heavenly Bodies

New Zealand-born and San Francisco-based, Tamaryn has quietly been impressing in shoegaze circles for a couple of years now. Her second album 'Tender New Signs' sees her ironing out some of the cracks that made her first few releases more of an acquired taste. Still retaining that noisy edge, 'Heavenly Bodies' ups the dreaminess and melody but still comes curled up in a blanket of electric fuzz. However you like your ethereal guitar sounds, you should find this track a pretty rewarding listen.
