Zeit - Life is Just a Blur

EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

They probably didn't throw away the mould after they made this new EP from Gothenburg shoegazers Zeit, because it's the same one they've been using for countless bands for over two decades, so someone else is sure to want it. Yeah, Zeit are all about the fuzzier end of shoegaze, and just because others have been repeating the same trick for years it doesn't mean that we should write them off. Far from it in fact. Fuzzy guitar; how many times have those two words appeared in reviews recently? It's the revival that just won't go away. The band formed in 2009 and we know they had an EP out in 2011, but this could be the first new material since then, and mostly it's very familiar.

That classic combination of fuzz and chimes is called into action for opener 'Sky', a song that sees them drop the noise for the verses and instantly gives them something extra, something most similarly-minded bands wouldn't bother with. They do the brief atmospheric interlude well too, it's called 'Tremor' and is warped but pretty. Then it's back to crashing drums and colossal chords of distortion on the excellent 'Silvery Nights', it's a tried and tested formula but you still need a good song to go with it, and this probably wins the award for best in show. Those swathes of noise give way to something more uptempo for last track 'Beautiful Disaster', and, almost summing up the EP, it's difficult not to mention The Jesus & Mary Chain. We've heard it before, but it's fantastic to hear it all again sounding so good.
