Get Me Free #112: Into The Woods - The Magic Pudding

Article by KevW

Breaking free from such a vibrant and crowded music scene as that in Melbourne is a difficult business, but that's what Into The Woods will be hoping to do when they release their new album 'Don Juan And The Jilted Lovers' next year. It'll be the follow-up to 2012's debut 'Goldentone', and was apparently recorded in a haunted shed. Going off the strength of first single 'The Magic Pudding', not much of a potentially spooky surrounding has rubbed off onto the music, as this is really an indiepop song that has one foot in more mainstream sounds and takes bits and bobs from classic sounds of the past.

They mention The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and Pink Floyd as influences or possible forefathers to their music, and the melodic sensibility of at least a couple of those can be found here, as well as in the harmonies. There are also twangs that perhaps recall early surf records, as well as a brass section that joins in towards the end offering a more soulful slant. It's all pretty hi-octane though, with a bouncing indiepop stomp and jangly guitar splashed throughout, so the combination of ingredients and the fact that it's a heck of a catchy tune could see them transcend the scene in their hometown and go on to have that wider success after all. They're heading in the right direction anyway.
